How to integrate video interviewing into your hiring process

Video interviewing will never replace the in-person, one-on-one, final interviews needed to ensure a potential employee is the right fit for your company's culture. But it can be an extremely valuable tool to find top talent faster and improve the overall quality of hires.

Video Interviewing - MBA Focus

In an upcoming webinar hosted by MBA Focus, in partnership with InterviewStream, employers will learn that even though video interviewing will never replace the handshake, it should be an integral part of every company's recruitment process. The goal of the webinar is to introduce the five questions every employer should ask before implementing a video interviewing strategy; how to use pre-recorded video interviews for screening candidates; how to build a positive, branded candidate experience using video interviewing; and time saving tips and techniques for on-campus recruitment.

According to Marie Larsen, writer for Recruiter.com, "the reason video interviewing is going to hit it big is that it provides the most basic, simple, important fix imaginable: it saves money."

But video interviewing isn't just beneficial to employers, it's also convenient for candidates. In a recent SoloCup survey of students who were interviewed using InterviewStream’s pre-recorded video interviewing, 97% of students found the interview platform convenient to complete.

Video interviewing has already been widely adopted by: universities, to assist in their campus recruiting efforts; executive recruiting firms, to sort through candidates from around the world; and large corporations, to screen candidates in remote locations.

"For recruiters, video interviewing is the vehicle that finally delivers the package that hiring managers have long wanted: a more comprehensive profile of the candidate with less upfront investment from the hiring manager through a process that is both efficient and collaborative," states Talent HQ’s creator, editor, and Recruiting & Diversity Leader, Jason Buss.

But it wasn't always so prevalent. Despite existing for nearly a decade -- software like Skype, released in 2003, and companies like InterviewStream, founded in 2003 -- video interviewing wasn't truly adopted until the 2008-2009 recession. During that time, 52% of companies expected to decrease hiring, travel budgets were slashed, and companies and career service offices were forced to do more with less.

Today, the benefits of video interviewing include: increasing recruiting productivity, improving quality of hire, eliminating or significantly reducing travel costs, reducing CO2 emissions, building stronger relationships earlier in the interview process, and removing time barriers associated with international recruitment.

For more information on best practices in video interviewing, join two of the leaders in video interviewing and recruitment technology -- Dave Hoy, founder of MBA Focus, and Randy Bitting, CEO of InterviewStream -- for a webinar on Tuesday May 15 at 12:00 noon EST to discuss how to integrate video interviewing into your current recruitment processes. Registrations are open until midnight EST on May 14. Sign up now at https://www.mbafocus.com/Webinar.aspx.

What is Recruiting?

Recruiting is the process of finding, screening, and selecting qualified candidates for a job at a company or organization. Recruitment begins the moment a job becomes available and ends when an offer of employment is accepted by a job seeker. In between, the recruitment team (or person) may perform any or all of the following tasks: creating a job description, advertising the job, sourcing, screening, interviewing, performing background checks (including references, credit checks, and degree verification), making a job offer, negotiating (terms of employment, relocation, salary), and orienting candidates to the workplace (“onboarding”).

How does recruiting work?
As you can no doubt tell, the process of recruitment involves a lot of legwork for recruiters. Probably the toughest task for any recruiter is finding qualified candidates, which is very time-consuming. Some of the tools recruiters use to find candidates include:

  • Sourcing. Instead of passively waiting for job-seekers to come to them via job posts, recruiters actively search for candidates who fit the bill for the job they need to fill. Recruiters “source” by gathering specific information such as a candidate’s name and contact information. Sometimes, they also glean information about the candidate’s skills and experience in a particular field. Recruiters find this kind of information from online searches (e.g., job portals, forums, alumni or other group listings, blogs, and networking websites), by calling a company directly to find out information about its employees, or by asking for employee referrals. Unfortunately, this research is often done one candidate at a time, resulting in a time-intensive and manual process.
  • On-campus recruiting is also important in today’s recruiting environment. Many companies host a variety of events on campuses across the country, such as corporate presentations, workshops, and interview sessions. Some firms arrange company site visits for a select group of invitees, while other companies set up mentor programs or networking events. Global Focus “U” and your school's career services office is a great way to stay on top of these events and receive notice of on-campus activities.
  • Job postings. Employers advertise (or “post”) jobs in print and online—using trade journals, web sites, and online job boards to post their vacant positions. Job search websites have job search functions, and also allow users to post a resume to attract potential employers. Some online job boards specialize in a particular industry, location, or other criteria. Many firms also post jobs on their own company websites. The main limitation of job postings is that there may be hundreds or even thousands of candidates apply for a position. This means a lot of competition for the candidate. For the recruiter, it means a lot of time spent sorting and sifting through piles of unqualified applicants to identify the truly qualified ones.

Find Job-Seeking MBAs from Top Business Schools on Twitter

Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter are extremely valuable hiring tools with today’s growing desire for instant information and dependency on networking. Facebook and LinkedIn fulfill the networking dependency. Twitter is better for delivering instant information.

Twitter has grown over 1000% in the last year – mainly b/c of the celebrity presence. But this doesn’t mean it can’t be used as an effective hiring/recruiting tool. Many companies have a presence on Twitter. And some of the bigger employers have multiple accounts, including an entire job/hiring-dedicated presence.

Now, business schools are jumping on the bandwagon; even those older, more established programs. These schools are just some of the b-schools @MBAFocus is already following on Twitter:
